Women In Development

Women in Development
The women in construction project aims to create a pool of women to enhance Employment Equity, Skills Development, support SMME's and BEE strategies and Corporate Social Responsibility.

An invitation to a briefing session took place in October 2004 at HRD John Ware.

Women who were interested in participating in this exciting initiative, submitted their names and the project was officially launched in Soweto in December 2004.

Training for external women commenced on
17 January 2005.

Women in Development

We registered 50 women for the first phase. 40 women were trained. They were divided into 2 groups and received training on Signage, Kerbing, Paving and basic health and safety.

HRD also included the first Aid and HIV/Aids training. The class training was finalized by the 18th March by the 4th of April the women went to the respective Depot where they worked with the depot teams for the June 16 trail. They were divided into three groups, two groups for footway, kerbing and one group for signage. Protective clothing was arranged so that when they go to the sites they whould have proper uniforms.

Women in Development

THE NEXT STEP WAS
to either seek employment for the women or form companies to create employment for them. The JRA handed the teams over to South African Women in Construction (SAWIC) for registration, mentoring and support.

THE SECOND PHASE was for Saturday school mainly JRA employess.

THIRD PHASE is for Ivory Park women.

JRA to the Rescue

Mrs Twala and Sifiso Twala with
Mayor Amos Masondo

Sifiso Twala matriculated from the Alexandra High School in 2001. He was awarded a place at the University of the Witwatersrand to study civil engineering.

Unfortunately due to the lack of sufficient funds he could not enroll with the institution.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency stepped in and offered to sponsor Sifiso's studies at the Witwatersrand Technikon. During the 2002 academic year the JRA sponsored Sifiso's studies with +/- R45 000.00, including registration, accommodation and tuition fees.

Sifiso says he chose engineering because he always had a thing about the construction things. He feels that he can play a vital role in projects like the Alexandra Renewal Project by being a resident in the area and in the field of engineering. When he is not studying, he can be found on a basketball court, listening to good music or reading.

We wish him all the best with his studies. Siyaphumelela!!!

The JRA hasted the Zivuseni project on the 1 May 2002 around the Inner City and the Johannesburg CBD. The aim of the project was to call South Africans to stand up and do things themselves. The JRA decided to link up with the Mayor's strategic thrusts on the regeneration of the Inner City.

Invitations were sent out to the Mayor, Board of Directors, Councilors, CEO's and Managing Directors of the Inner City top Companies. The JRA staff was also invited to participate on this project.

Painting of Traffic Light

The JRA's contribution towards this project will be five fold: an education component regarding the stealing and vandalizing of roads infrastructure, the painting of road markings and poles in the Inner City, fixing of all traffic light globes, fixing of storm water drain manhole covers and the removal of illegal signage and replacement of old signage with new signage.

The Zivuseni project was initiated from the President's office Vukuzenzele project and the Gauteng Premier welcomed it by translating it to Zivuseni.
