PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

PARTNERSHIP PLANNING: The JRA Board Member Francis Matabane (Center), MD Duduzile Maseko ( Right) and Raven Shabe (Left)

“PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE”

Compiled by Nkosana Lekotjolo, Nkosinathi Nhlapo and Nampusheng Sebatane

THE high-level Special Executive Management Meeting (EMT) and Strategic Workshop of Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), was held on the 8th July 2010 at Pyramid Conference Center. The meeting was attended by the agency’s most powerful decisions makers, from the JRA Board Member Francis Matabane, the Managing Director (MD) Duduzile Maseko, General Executive Managers of all business units, Operations Managers and all Managers. Michael Rassol, a motivational Speaker said the Agency needs to plan in line with the objectives of its mother organisation, the City of Joburg, and that the partof planning should enable JRA to “have measurable outputs.”

“ We need to find out why are we planning. JRA’s mandate has to fit the City’s objectives. There is no de-linking between what the MD is measured on and the individual managers. It cascades down the organisation, from the MD, to business units and all individual employees within the organisation. As we plan we need to know where we are and where we are going. We need to measure our outputs or outcomes. We need to measure how many roads we have fixed that we had initially planned for.

MOTIVATION: Michael Rasool during JRA’s Strategic Workshop.

Matabane said it was “critical” for JRA when planning to also consider planning for partnership with other Joburg’s Municpal Owned Entities (MOEs). “ Tomorrow when we do our planning, we also need to plan for a strategic partnership with other agencies,” he said. He also added that the JRA’s five year term strategic plan should be equal to the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), challenges and budget requirements.

Raven Shabe said: “ In order for the Agency to achieve its objectives, our employees must adopt a performance based culture.”
